Catching up with Jeremy Vondenkamp

Jeremy Vondenkamp capped off his Marion High School track and field career in 2006 with a state championship in the 300-meter hurdles.

He has spent the past two seasons as a member of the Benedictine College track and field team.

1. What are you doing this summer, whether athletic or job related?

This summer I am working at a tool company here in Atchison — Blish Mize.

After work I get some running in, whether it be hills or laps around the track.

2. What have you been doing since you graduated from Marion?

Living the dream. LOL. No, I've been working hard at school trying to finish early.

I'm still running track and making as much money as I can.

3. What have been your top achievements in school and/or on the track?

My top achievements thus far in college have been being able to balance the school work and track.

On the track, my achievements are qualifying for nationals and setting the 60-meter hurdle school record.

4. What is your best memory from MHS?

1. Being able to have good times with great friends.

2. Now that I look back on it, I really miss Friday nights in the fall playing football.

3. Winning a track state title.

5. What has been the biggest difference going from college to high school?

The biggest difference for me is the ability to do things on my own.

When I was in high school I had my parents cook me dinner, do laundry, etc.

Now in college I get to do all of that on my own, and I love it.

I love the freedom in that I can do what I want to do when I want to do it.

6. If you could give advice to a graduating senior, what would it be?

Hit the books early. Actually read the books you are given, and don't be afraid to ask help from a tutor if you need it.

7. Who will win the Big XII championship in football?

Well this is tough. My roommate Joe is a big Mizzou fan, and he says Missouri will take it this year.

Being a Nebraska fan I would like to say Nebraska, but I just don't think they have what it takes this year so I am going with the odds-on favorite — Oklahoma.

8. What do you do in your spare time?

In my spare time I like to go out and hang out with my friends in Kansas City or Lawrence.

9. What are your favorite TV shows or movies?

Anything that makes me laugh: "That 70s Show," Comedy Central, "SportsCenter."

10. What are you future plans after leaving school?

I'm still in the process of deciding whether I want to get my master's degree or not.

If not, I will graduate with a business marketing degree and then hopefully get my real estate license.

11. What is your main goal you have left to accomplish before graduating?

To push myself to always be better, in and out of the classroom.
