Census figures paint detailed picture of Marion County

Up by 62. That's the population count in Marion County for 2001, as compared to 2000's decennial census, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The county population rose from 13,361 in 2000 to 13,423 the following year, according to recently released census figures.

This growth represented a .5 percent increase in the county, compared to a .2 percent population growth in the entire state of Kansas, to 2,694,641 in 2001.

From 1990 to 2000, however, the state population grew by 8.5 percent and Marion County's by just 3.7 percent.

Seven percent of the state's people, and 5.5 percent of Marion County's, were under 5 years of age in 2000.

Those under 18 numbered 26.5 percent in the state, 24.8 percent in this county, pretty well gibing.

People 65 and older made up 13.3 percent of Kansas' populace in 2000, but constituted 21.1 percent of those in Marion County.
