Centre USD 397 board of education met Dec. 12 at the Centre High School library.
The board approved an after school Biddy Basketball program for students enrolled in grades four, five, and six. Dates have yet to be decided. Co-coaches Russ Hake and Cody Schafer will receive $350 each.
The board also authorized a payment of $2,704 to National Union Insurance for coverage of errors, leaders, and omissions.
It increased pay for the employee hired to provide student driving instruction from $16.50 to $20 per hour.
The board approved an extended learning opportunity program on an as-needed basis beginning with the spring semester, with a faculty stipend of $20 an hour.
Following a demonstration of an automatic external defibrillator by Jesse Brunner, the board unanimously voted to purchase one unit to be placed at the 5-12 building at a cost not to exceed $1,900, and to provide the necessary in-service for staff and others to use the equipment.
Discussion continued about options and financing for moving K-4 students to the 5-12 site. The issue will be addressed further at the January meeting.
Band instructor Kenneth Roe shared information regarding new Smart Music technology. The computerized program allows a microphone to be attached to an instrument.
The student plays a short segment of music during which the machine judges notes, pitch, and timing. Roe uses the information to assess the student's progress.
The student dress code was discussed. Kiblinger said a few constituents had expressed concerns.
According to Kiblinger, the board concluded the current dress code published in the student handbook is sufficient and needs to be enforced.
The phrase "school-sponsored activities" will be added to the dress code to clarify when it is in force. A copy of the dress code will be sent with grade cards to parents.
