Centre girls add two games to win column

Centre girls' varsity defeated Bennington, 47-41, Dec. 14 for their second win of the season. They defeated Wakefield Friday, 70-55 for a 2-0 start in the Eisenhower League and a 3-4 record overall.
The game with Bennington was tied numerous times during the first half. Good scoring by Selena Seifert and others kept Centre in the game. The Lady Cougars were down by two, 14-16, at halftime.
Centre opened the third quarter with seven unanswered points, five by Jackie Klenda and two by Brittany Owens, to give the Lady Cougars a 21-16 lead.
From then on, they remained in front, although Bennington battled back to within one or two points several times.
Owens had a good third quarter, contributing 11 of Centre's 16 points, including one three-pointer. Centre led 30-24 at the end of the quarter.
Both teams scored 17 points in the final quarter. Seven players added points for Centre including Krista Heiser, Megan Gutsch, Shaina Makovec, and Brianne Stahlecker, for a six-point win.
Owens was leading scorer with 15 points, followed by Seifert with 10. Krista Heiser led rebounding with 13.
The junior varsity won a close game by a score of 31-28. After a 6-10 start in the first quarter, the Lady Cougars outscored Bennington in the next two quarters 9-7 and 10-6 to keep them in the game. They were ahead by two points, 25-23, at the end of the third quarter.
Kylie Burhoop provided Centre's six points including a three-pointer, field goal, and free throw in the fourth quarter. Bennington scored five to give Centre a three-point win.
Burhoop led scoring with 15 points. Dani Hatfield, Amy Hajek, Samantha Alvarez, and Chelsey Tajchman contributed four points each. Tajchman had seven rebounds.
Wakefield
In the game with Wakefield, the girls took a first quarter lead, 13-10, on a last-second shot by Gutsch.
Fenske had a good second quarter, contributing eight of 20 points for Centre compared to 14 by Wakefield. Centre led 33-24 at halftime.
They continued to outscore Wakefield in the second half. Seifert scored a three-point goal as the buzzer sounded at the end of the third quarter to make the score 54-43 in Centre's favor.
Alyssa Luna came on strong in the second half of the fourth quarter to score three field goals. The game ended with a 15-point Centre victory.
The team shot 40 percent from the field and 65 percent from the free-throw line. They stole the ball 19 times.
Fenske was leading scorer with 14 points, followed closely by Seifert with 13. Gutsch and Seifert led rebounding with six each.
The junior varsity defeated Wakefield, 38-31. They were ahead by one point at the end of the first quarter and outscored Wakefield 11-5 in the second, to lead 18-11 at halftime.
Burhoop contributed six points including a three, two, and free throw in the third quarter as Centre garnered 14 points compared to 11 for Wakefield. The girls were outscored 9-6 in the final quarter but their lead was wide enough to give them a seven-point win.
Burhoop scored a total of 11 points, followed by Luna, Hatfield, Hajek, and Tajchman with four each. Hatfield was leading rebounder with seven.
