Centre girls are first at Sterling
Girls place
first in six events

Centre High School girls' track team took first place Thursday in the Sterling Quint track meet. Other schools were Halstead, Hillsboro, Inman, and Sterling.
Coach Marc Grout credits good work by his assistant coaches Stan Wiles, Ryan Isbell, and Alan Stahlecker for the team's good performance.
"They're doing all the work," he said. "They're getting them in shape."
The girls placed first in six events.
"Conditions at Sterling were not so good," Grout said. "It was cold and windy, but the team did well."
Laura Klenda's 113'7" javelin throw was an improvement of more than seven feet over her outstanding first place performance the previous week at Marion.
Kathleen Meek's 13.6 second run in the 100m dash equaled her 13.66 fourth-place finish at Marion. She also finished first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 55.35 seconds.
Raschelle Jirak's 35'2 1/2" shot put throw was more than four feet farther than in Marion.
Other first place winners were Dani Hatfield, 3200m run, 13:44.74, and Jackie Klenda, 400m dash, 1:10.45.

In boys' events, Centre's Justin Garrard placed first in the 3200-meter run the second time this year with a time of 11 minutes, 6.31 seconds. He also placed first in the 1600m run with a time of 5.16.4.
Four team members placed second including Aaron Barney, Mark Pagenkopf, Eric Peterson, and Todd Stahlecker.
The team placed fourth over-all.
