Centre girls defeat White City

Centre Lady Cougars closed out the regular basketball season with a win and a loss.

They defeated White City Feb. 11, 48-39, in an away game.

The girls out-shot White City 37 to 28 percent and out-rebounded them 43 to 23 percent. White City shot 40 percent from the free-throw line, compared to 29 percent by Centre.

Laura Klenda had 18 rebounds and Stephanie Hajek contributed four successful assists. Leading scorer was Alisha Loveless, with 20, followed by Ashlee Bowman with 12.

The junior varsity also had a successful night, defeating White City 37-20.

Centre led throughout the game with quarterly scores of 8-4, 14-4, 26-11, and 37-20.

All six members of the team contributed points. Jennifer Arndt had 9, followed by Kristin Mueller, 8; Brianne Stahlecker, 7; Jill Fenske, 6; Shaina Makovec, 4; and Trisha Pauls, 3.

Centre vs. Herington

The varsity girls struggled Friday in their contest with Herington. Herington shot 42 percent from the field and 68 percent from the free-throw line compared to 27 and 36 percent, respectively, by Centre.

Poor shooting during the first quarter put Centre down 5-12.

The Lady Cougars picked up their play in the second quarter, including a setup and steal by Bowman and a three-pointer by Loveless.

After Herington's Lana Miller completed shots in two consecutive possessions, Centre was down by three, 20-23, at half-time.

The Lady Railers gained on Centre during the third quarter and were up by nine, 27-36, going into the fourth. The Lady Cougars fought their way to within six points, 32-38, with a little more than four minutes to go. But that was as close as they got.

A rash of last-minute fouls by Centre left Herington up 50-37 at the final buzzer.

Klenda led scoring with 14 points. Loveless added nine points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

The girls end the regular season with an over-all record of 7-13. They played 6-10 St. Xavier Tuesday at Junction City in the first round of the 1A regional tournament
