Centre girls disappointed with season opener
Centre Lady Cougars finished their first volleyball quad of the season with one win, two losses. The contest was played Sept. 3 at Elyria Christian High School, McPherson.
Eight players served on the Centre varsity squad. Rally scoring was used in third games, with a point being scored on every serve by one team or the other.
The girls got off to a good start with three close games versus Canton-Galva. They won the first 15-9, lost the second 15-17, and won the third 15-13.
Laura Klenda, Stephanie Heiser, Ashlee Bowman, and Jill Fenske did a good job spiking the ball, with successful completion of most attempts.
The team completed a total of 58 out of 63 serves.
In the following match, Inman came on strong, shocking the Lady Cougars in two games, 15-2 and 15-4.
They then faced Elyria and lost big in the first game, 1-15. However, they rallied in the second game with a score of 15-13. After leading 9-2 in the third game, the girls lost their momentum and were defeated 14-16.
"We used a lot of energy against Canton Galva," Coach Yvonne Burhoop said. "We don't have a deep bench, the gym was hot, and it would have helped if we could have won in two games rather than three."
She said Inman intimidated the Lady Cougars and had an outstanding hitter, then their game fell flat against Elyria.
"I think they were disappointed in coming away with only one win," she said.
Centre will be hosting an invitational tournament Saturday. Participating teams include Council Grove, Hope, Marion, Hillsboro, Berean, Burrton, Herington, and Centre.

Junior varsity
The junior varsity lost to Canton Galva 13-15 and 9-15 and lost to Inman 5-15 and 3-15. They defeated Elyria 15-13 and 15-8, for two losses and one win.
