Centre girls end season with loss to Goessel
Competition was fierce as the Centre Lady Cougars faced the Goessel Lady Bluebirds in the first round of the 1A regional tournament.
Going into the tournament, third-seed Goessel had a record of 12-7 and sixth seed Centre was 6-13. The game was played at Goessel.
It was a close game all the way, but the game ended with a final score of Goessel 59, Centre 55.
Goessel shot 39 percent from the field. Centre shot 37. Centre outdid Goessel in rebounds, 42-26, but Goessel completed 22 free throws compared to 10 by Centre.
The Lady Cougars led during the first half. The girls got off to a good start and were up, 15-8, at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Bluebirds crept up on them during the second quarter, however, and narrowed the gap to two points, 26-24, by halftime.
Goessel took over in the second half and outscored Centre in the third quarter by five points, which gave the Lady Bluebirds a three-point lead going into the fourth.
Raschelle Jirak scored an impressive 20 points before fouling out of the game. Laura Klenda had 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Klenda, who played her last game as a senior, felt that despite the loss, the team had played a good game, ending the season on a note of optimism.
Other seniors were Kathleen Meek, Ashlee Bowman, and Kristin Mueller.
