Centre girls finish at regional tournament

Centre High School volleyball team participated Oct. 21 in the class 1A regional tournament at Hartford.

During the first round, the eighth-seeded Lady Cougars (8-13) were defeated by third-seeded Williamsburg (13-7) in two games, 12-25 and 20-25, bringing their season to an end. Their overall record was nine wins and 15 losses.

Coach Yvonne Burhoop said she doesn't know why the season didn't go better. She said the win/loss record is not an indication of the team's practices.

"We had good practices but they didn't translate into wins. We didn't get a fire lit even though we had the skills," Burhoop said.

Despite more losses than wins, the girls had a good time, she said.

In the first game with Williamsburg, Brianne Stahlecker and Jackie Klenda each served for two points. Eight rally points were added, and the team completed 11 of 12 serve attempts.

In game two, J. Klenda scored four, Jill Fenske and Stahlecker three, and Laura Klenda and Megan Gutsch one each. Eight rally points were added.

J. Klenda contributed two individual aces for the match. She was 100 percent in spiking, completing eight of eight. She also had one block.

Senior Laura Klenda, playing her last game as a CHS student, completed 20 of 24 spike attempts and had eight kills and three blocks.

Megan Gutsch completed 11 of 15 spikes and contributed one kill and one block. Senior Jill Fenske completed 10 of 14 spike attempts.

Stahlecker had perfect setting, with 24 of 24. Senior Raschelle Jirak set 27 of 29.
