Centre runners end regular season at Chapman
Centre High School cross country team participated Thursday in the last meet of the regular season at Chapman.
Senior Justin Garrard finished first out of 45 who ran in the boys' junior/senior division. His time was 17 minutes, eight seconds. He placed first in five of the six meets and continues to run more than a minute faster than the previous year.
Junior Dani Hatfield finished eighth among 37 in the girls' junior/senior division, with a time of 14 minutes.
The girls' freshman/sophomore race included 36 participants. Brittany Owens finished 22nd with a time of 16:12, Allie Will 25th, at 16:34, and Justine Jennings, 30th, at 17:31.
Coach Alan Stahlecker said finish times from one week to the next are not comparable because courses differ in various ways. They can be flat or hilly, asphalt or grass. Individual runners can get a more accurate assessment of their performance by comparing times from one year to another at the same location.
Team members will compete Oct. 23 at the 1A regional cross country meet at Lake Afton, west of Wichita. The state meet will follow a week later at Wamego.
