After a 25-minute executive session Monday to evaluate Superintendent Jerri Kemble's performance, the board of education of Centre USD 397 extended her contract through the 2009-10 year. Kemble met with the board for approximately 15 minutes of the private session.

Kemble reported that four bus bids were received but only one was in compliance with specifications. Consequently, the board voted to reject all bids and reopen the bidding process.

Kemble also reported that Hope High School (in Rural Vista USD 481) had lost its instructor in higher math. Rural Vista administrators asked for an Interactive Distance Learning (IDL) class to be taught from Centre High School to enable the four students to complete their studies for the year.

After further consultations, it was determined that a satisfactory arrangement could be made for instructor Pat Schoenhofer to teach the class on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Rural Vista will pay the Centre district $1,000, with $750 going to the instructor and $250 to be used for incidentals arising from the arrangement.

The board entered into an executive session for 18 minutes with administrators to consider a student matter.

After returning to open session, the board voted to deny a request from Teresa Craft, Hillsboro, to allow her son, Christopher Craft, to transfer back to Centre High School. He previously was a student in Centre schools.

The board responded affirmatively to a question submitted by Marion County Parents As Teachers as to the district's willingness to continue to participate in the program for fiscal year 2009, with district shares based on the Sept. 20 K-12 FTE count.

Terri Turley was hired as assistant cook at the high school site for $7.50 per hour. She will work six hours a day.

Executive sessions were held with Kemble to discuss personnel and negotiations with teachers.

Nadine Smith, 7-12 principal, announced winners of the district spelling bee.

Junior high winners were first, Theo Kassebaum, eighth grader; second, Dillon Svitak, seventh grader; and alternate, Michael Beeler, eighth grader.

Fourth through sixth grade winners were first, Brianna Svoboda, sixth grader; second, Cacey Simons, sixth grader; and alternate, Justin Bina, fifth grader.

They will compete Thursday in the county spelling bee in Hillsboro.

Four-Year-Old At Risk instructor Brianna Methvin reported on the learning activities that go on in her classroom. She has 16 pupils and is assisted by Vicki Jirak.
