A negotiated agreement with Centre Teachers' Association was ratified unanimously Aug. 11 by the Centre USD #397 Board of Education.
The agreement is little changed from the previous year, with teachers' compensation schedule remaining unchanged.
Teachers who take personal leave with pay will be compensated at the substitute teacher rate of $70 per day.
After a public hearing prior to the regular meeting, the board adopted the 2003-2004 budget as published. It totals $3,318,576 and reflects a drop in mill levy from 45.722 in 2002-2003 to 43.978 for 2003-2004, due largely to the governor's anticipated tax accelerator proposal, which gives school districts more revenue in the 2003-2004 fiscal year.
General fund expenditures are based upon an estimated enrollment of 275.5 full-time students (FTE), using a three-year average, as allowed by law.
The components of the budget include:
General fund, 20 mills, approximately $2,228,565. General fund revenue raised on the local level will total $306,205.
Capital outlay, 4 mills, $220,000, with $66,789 from local sources.
Supplemental general fund (LOB), 14.988 mills, $375,000. The LOB tax equals 16.83 percent (of the general fund). A maximum of 25 percent is allowed by law.
Bond and interest, 4.99 mills, $83,317. This was raised from 4.129 mills to ensure that funds will be available to meet bond and interest obligations of the building addition project.
Classified personnel hired by the board include Dawn Kaiser, bus driver, and Holly Hemmer, part-time housekeeper, at $7 per hour.
Students approved for out-of-district attendance include Rebecca and Ashley Dericks and Christopher and Kama Craft of Herington and Courtney Hett and Kirsten Hansen of Marion.
The board approved a contract allowing a student to travel in a privately owned vehicle for child-care training at Butler County Community College. The student will receive mileage reimbursement.
A first reading was done on minor changes to numerous board policies.
Routine items included:
- appointment of Nancy Brockmeier as the K-12 homeless coordinator.
- appointment of Paul Longhofer and Robert Vohs as special education due process hearing officers.
- approval of undergraduate hours in Information Processing Systems completed by Stan Wiles at Butler County Community College.
The board authorized Superintendent Demitry Evancho to pursue bids on new roofing for Centre Elementary School.
Evancho said the roof has reached its life expectancy, although leaks have been avoided through routine maintenance.
