Centre USD 397 approves pay increases years ago

At a special meeting Oct. 18, the board of education of Centre USD #397 approved a negotiated agreement with Centre Teachers Association for 2006-07.

It includes a salary increase of 3.76 percent and an addition of $25 to every step of the salary schedule. The new base salary is $30,300. Total cost to the district is $58,914.34, an overall increase of 4.67 percent.

Other changes are an increase in hourly pay from $7 to $10 for home activities and from $12 to $18 for academic-related work performed beyond the established contract day.

Home activities include supervisory duty, gate keeping, sports team assistance, and concession stand supervision.

The only other action taken was to increase the hourly wage of classified staff by 4.67 percent, retroactive to the date the earlier-approved 3.5 percent increase went into effect.

At the board's regular monthly meeting Oct. 9, Superintendent Bob Kiblinger announced final enrollment figures. The 2006-07 head count is 279 compared to 266 in the fall of 2003, 265 in 2004, and 297 in 2005.

FTE (full-time equivalency) enrollment is 262, not including pre-kindergarten. It was 282 the previous year.

Centre Elementary School (K-6) has 151 students, Centre Junior High School has 36 students, and Centre High School has 92 students.

The board met in a 40-minute executive session with the superintendent to discuss non-elected personnel.

In open session, they voted to increase the substitute custodian wage for Warren Barton for long-term substitution from $6.75 per hour to $8.75 per hour, effective Sept. 27.

In other actions, the board:

— approved a contract with Jeanne Rziha, Tampa, for nursing consultation and services for the 2006-07 school year.

— approved a $2,500 contract with Kansas Association of School Boards to assist in the search for a new superintendent for the next school year. The board also voted to consider a search to employ two administrators for the district.

— authorized Superintendent Kiblinger to accept district property/casualty insurance and auto fleet insurance coverage through Sunflower Group, Inc. for a premium not to exceed $97,000.
