CG and S tire center sold

Cooperative Grain & Supply stockholders received a letter from CG&S general manager Lyman Adams and board chairman Lyle Suderman announcing the decision to sell Hillsboro Service Center.

According to the letter, effective July 1, 2004, the center and adjacent lot will be sold to The Lumberyard.

The center has been in operation for six years. Board members have discussed the future of the service center, which had been losing revenue each year.

Members "reached the conclusion that it was in the best interest of CG&S to sell the property and eliminate the service," the letter stated.

"The business industry has changed drastically," Adams said. "We had an opportunity to exit the business and we chose to do so."

As far as what plans The Lumberyard has for the property, president and manager Jon Hefley said, "We hope to improve the Hillsboro community and keep another business alive and not have empty buildings in the city."

Plans are underway to expand and renovate the building. It will be used as a display center for The Lumberyard's rental tools and service.

"With the display center, we won't have to haul out our equipment each time," Hefley said. "It will be on display for our customers to see."

Hefley said that they are open to any new ideas community members may have for them.

"Stop by and give us some ideas," he said. "We will see what the future brings."

In its letter to members, CG&S officials stated that it will still provide some of the services to its customers, such as oil and grease and steel products and twine, at its Industrial Park facility.
