Chamber considers repair, replacement of Christmas sculptures

The shaggy appearance of several life-size Christmas sculptures has led volunteers in Marion to seek their repair or replacement.

One of the nativity scene figures was brought to the chamber of commerce meeting Friday. The shepherd is faded, has numerous areas of chipped and peeling paint, and a large crack along one forearm.

Jami Williams, chairman of the Christmas decorations committee, said she planned fund-raisers, particularly among local churches, to replace the figures.

Cost to replace is estimated at $5,000 to $15,000 for the set.

Chamber member Casey Case suggested repair of the existing figures be considered. It would be less expensive. Williams agreed to pursue that possibility.

Williams also wants to look into replacing the decorations that hang from the light poles, and possibly others.

In a related matter, the Marion High School vocational class may build a new Santa house as a semester project. The old house needs to be replaced. Anyone interested in helping pay for materials for the project should contact teacher Roger Schwab or the chamber office.

Volunteers are needed to help with various aspects of Art in the Park on Sept. 21, reported organizer Judy Christensen.

Organizers limit participants to 200 so the park doesn't get too crowded. Some of the crafters are longtime participants, while others will be new. Vendors appreciate the many volunteers, food vouchers, and other assistance they receive. Those interested in volunteering should call the chamber office.

Also, the chamber is accepting volunteers to work four-hour shifts in the city booth at the state fair.
