Children enjoy egg hunt at Tampa

Tisha Webb, bride-elect of Evan Backhus, was honored with a come and go bridal shower Sunday afternoon in the basement of St. John's Lutheran Church. Hostesses were Evan's aunts, Mary Wylie of White City and Cindy Biehler and Carol Diekmann of Herington. Invited guests included Leah Webb, Mary Anna Backhus, Mardee Backhus, and Gladiola Backhus of Herington, Jenny Albrecht of White City, Alona Hedstrom of Burdick, Tana Riffel and daughters of Lincolnville, Frieda Bentz, Alma Meyer, Donna Backhus, Tina Clement, Virginia Bentz, Cheri Bentz and Tyler, Jeanne Rziha, and the women of the St. John's congregation.

John and Pat Schwartzman of Salina, Max and Stella Kohler of Silver Spring, Md., Wayne and Marita Schwartzman and Helen Jean McGonigle of Wichita, Larry Parsons of Mount Hope, and Helen Schwartzman enjoyed dinner at the café Sunday followed by visiting at Helen's home in the afternoon and evening. Additional afternoon visitors were Marcel and Irma Benda. Evening visitors were Martha Melcher and Eleanor Murphy.

Bob and Dorothy Gresham of McPherson, Mary Reich of Hope, and Georgia Spohn enjoyed dinner in Herington Sunday.

Tampa youth attending a convention of the Catholic Youth Organization in Wichita Saturday and Sunday included Cecilia Rziha, Kristin Mueller, Dana Depo, Raschelle Jirak, Andrea and Amanda Kleiber, Jackie and Laura Klenda, Alisa Fernandes, and Shaina Makovec. Holy Family Parish CYO was honored with a parish recognition award and the "On Fire with Faith" award. Brian Bina was named the Diocese's Outstanding Catholic Youth of the Year. Andrea Kleiber was chosen Region 2 representative to the Diocesan Catholic Youth Board, and Sarah Davidson was elected co-chairpman of communications on the board. Cecilia Rziha and James Bina received the Region 2 "Light of Christ" awards. Father Mike Scully, keynote speaker, played modern music and used it to present the gospel.

Molly Kerbs of Salina spent the weekend with her grandparents, Reuben and Lucille Kerbs. All attended the 4-H meeting Friday evening, where Rustyn Kerbs gave, as a part of the program, a demonstration on how to make dog biscuits. Additional after church visitors were Russ and Julie Kerbs and Rustyn. Lucille and Molly attended the bridal shower for Tisha Webb Sunday afternoon.

Members of the Knights of Columbus and their wives enjoyed their annual dinner Saturday evening at Mr. K's farmhouse in Abilene. Many attended mass at St. Andrew's Church prior to the dinner.

Jane Vajnar attended a golden wedding reception for her cousins, Barbara and Rex Morton, Sunday afternoon at the senior center in Canton. She got to see many relatives she had not seen for a long time — even a couple of very young cousins she had never seen before.

Leroy Schwartzman returned home to Ballwin, Mo., Saturday after spending the week with his mother, Helen Schwartzman.

The Centre High School choir performed at the regional music festival at Tabor College Saturday. Also performing was a trio consisting of Andrea Carlson, Tad Remy, and Cecilia Rziha. Cecilia played a solo on the baritone horn and sang. Her vocal solo earned a I rating, so she will compete at the state festival.

Georgia Spohn met Norma and Orlin Wagner of Wichita for dinner Friday at Kingfisher's Inn near Marion.

Jack and Sharon Grosse of Peabody were Thursday dinner guests of Adeline Bernhardt.

Jerry and Jeanne Rziha, Cecilia and Julie went to Wichita March 30 for the baptism of Peter Thomas Herron, followed by a dinner in his honor at the home of Jim and Diane Herron and Andrew. Peter's sponsors were Wayne and Shannon Rziha of Tulsa, Okla. Other family members present included Janie Rziha and John and Jeanne Rziha, Michael, Christopher, Joseph and Timothy of Atchison and Sister Mary Cora Rziha of Wichita. Later in the afternoon, the Rzihas met Dana Depo at the airport and she returned home with them. Diane, Andrew, and Peter came to Tampa with them and stayed until Thursday.

Georgia Spohn and Jane Vajnar were among those attending the Leaning in Retirement program titled "Focus on Youth" at Tabor College in Hillsboro Thursday morning. They heard the choir of Newton Christian High School, directed by Deborah Toews of Hesston. Then Wendell Loewen, assistant professor of biblical and religious studies at Tabor, talked about how the period of adolescence has changed over the years and ways adults can be supportive of young people at that time in their lives.

Leona Kleiber and Adeline Bernhardt visited Milda Krauter at Marion Manor in Marion Wednesday morning. After enjoying dinner out, they came home by way of Pilsen and visited Ruby Vinduska.

John and Pat Schwartzman of Salina spent March 30 with his mother, Helen Schwartzman. Carla and Amy Hajek were afternoon visitors.

Jim and Mary Clemmer and Jane Vajnar went to Wichita April 2. They stopped at Durham for dinner. Darrell Curbow of Bergman, Ark., joined them. He is following the Santa Fe Trail in a covered wagon pulled by a team of Belgian horses, so he had interesting tales to tell.

Martha Melcher, Eleanor Murphy, and Jim and Mary Clemmer visited Helen Schwartzman the evening of March 30.
