Children participate in Green Wing event

Eighty adults and children participated April 4 in Marion County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited first annual Green Wing event at Marion County Park and Lake.

Children ages five through 17 are eligible to join Green Wing. With their membership, children ages five through 12 receive a children's magazine, "Puddles," through Ducks Unlimited. Children ages 12 through 17, with a Green Wing membership, receive the regular Ducks Unlimited magazine.

Various educational activities were provided for the 55 children through the day including first aid training, dog training, duck calling, bird identification, laser and clay shooting, construction of wood duck boxes, and activity tables.

Mark Murel of Kansas Wildlife and Parks taught gun safety, including proper posture and stance. Children were given the opportunity to shoot clay pigeons from a trap set in an adjacent field.

Ed Augustine of Kansas Wildlife and Parks is a hunter education professional and provided a laser shooting screen for children.

Others who contributed or participated in the event were Flint Hills Retrievers, Lincolnville EMS, Carlsons' Grocery, The Lumberyard, and Mick Summervill.

The event was funded through a Sonny Walls Memorial Fund.
