Chili cook-off attracts 13 cooks years ago
The weather was nearly perfect Saturday afternoon during a chili competition at Marion County Lake.
Sponsored by the lake and organized by Roy Patton, Mike Crane, and Bob McCurdy, with assistance from county lake superintendent Steve Hudson, the event attracted 13 contestants in the cook-off.
From noon to 4 p.m., people had the opportunity to sample the chili and vote for their favorite by placing a chili bean in a container with 182 sample kits sold. Bowls of chili also were sold during the afternoon.
Earlier in the day, lake residents participated in lake-wide garage sales.
More than $685 was raised which will be used for lake improvements such as trees and benches.
Those with the top three votes received trophies for first, second, and third places, with the first place entry receiving a traveling trophy which will be passed on to the winner at next year's event.
The first place team was Roy Patton and Amy Peace with the chili "Peaceful." Second place went to Mike Crane for his "Flaming Fumes" entry. Third place was given to Bob McCurdy for "Thinkin'." All of the winners own homes or trailers at the lake.
A similar event is planned for next year.
