Emily Belton, a 1997 graduate of Centre High School, was guest speaker at Sunday's commencement exercises. Her brother, Derek, was a member of the graduating class.

Belton is a graduate of Kansas State University and is quality supervisor of ready-to-eat cereal production lines at a Quaker Oats plant at Blue Rapids, Iowa.

In her brief address, Belton noted she had seen the graduates grow up, having observed them since they were in kindergarten.

She challenged them to continue to educate themselves, whether it be through college, individual study, special courses, traveling, reading, or other means.

"Choosing to be educated is a powerful choice," she said.

She added that growing up in a rural community where parents instill basic moral values in their children also provides a powerful tool.

"I read once that luck is being ready for a chance," she said. "Use your power to be ready for a chance."

The high school band, under the direction of Kenneth Roe, provided the grand processional and recessional. A choral group presented an emotionally-tinged rendition of, "I Will Always Remember You."

Superintendent Demitry Evancho welcomed guests and thanked parents for the opportunity to work with their children.

Diplomas were presented by Ronnie Carlson, president of the board of education. He was assisted by Principal Neal Weltha and class sponsors Lisa Beye and Russ Hake.

Graduates receiving scholarship trophies were Derek Belton, Bohdana Depo, Danielle Engler, Curtis Gutsch, Stephanie Heiser, Kyle Luna, Kathleen Meek, Kristin Mueller, Trisha Naerebout, and Cecilia Rziha.

Afterward, the graduates formed a line outside the school and received congratulations and best wishes from friends and relatives.
