CHS Cougars win triangular

Centre High School girls showed their stuff Tuesday by defeating Flint Hills Christian of Manhattan in two games and Council Grove in three. The triangular was played on the home court.

"We improved from the week before," said coach Yvonne Burhoop. "A few junior kids got varsity time. They dug themselves into a hole a couple of times but then they dug themselves out and I was happy with that."

In game one with Flint Hills, Megan Gutsch served for five points The hard-fought game was won, 28-26.

In the second game, Jackie Klenda and Selena Seifert each served for five points and Brianne Stahlecker served for three. The final score was 25-20 for the win.

Jackie Klenda delivered 12 spikes and an ace overall. Stahlecker set 20-of-20 and had an individual ace.

The Lady Cougars won their first game against Council Grove, 25-22. Alyssa Luna led scoring with five points.

They lost the second game, 25-17. Klenda served for five points.

The third game was won, 25-18. Klenda served for eight points, and Jill Fenske and Luna served for three each.

The girls were aggressive from the front line as Megan Gutsch spiked the ball 15 times and blocked it three times. Kylie Burhoop delivered 18 spikes and eight kills. Fenske made 21 spikes, five kills, and three aces. Klenda spiked the ball 15 times and executed three kills.

Alyssa Luna set 11-of-11, one for a kill. Stahlecker set 31-of-32, six for a kill.

In a match between freshmen, Centre won in two games, 25-23 and 25-19. In game one, Teaira Turner served for eight points and Alisha Barney for three. The team completed 18 of 22 serves.

In game two, Turner served for 10 points, followed by Jessica Deines and Seifert with three each. They completed 22 of 24 serves.
