CHS: Garrard, Stahlecker earn honors

Seniors Grant Garrard and Andrea Stahlecker received Scholar Athlete and Wendy's Heisman awards Monday during the annual athletic banquet at Centre High School.

In volleyball, Andrea Stahlecker was named most valuable player. She and Laura Klenda received all-league volleyball first team honors. Coach Yvonne Burhoop said a high point of the year was defeating Hope in tournament play.

Cross-country coach Laura Howard recognized freshman Justin Garrard as an outstanding runner who "always smoked the other runners."

In football, Simon Makovec was named most valuable defensive player and David Remmers was named most valuable offensive player. Kyle Luna received all-league football first team honors.

Greg Wyatt, girls' basketball coach, listed three game records: best free-throw percentage, 11 of 11; lowest field goal percentage, 14 percent; most turnovers, 48. Individual records were set by Laura Klenda, six for six and five for five in free-throws, and Raschelle Jirak, eight for eight in free-throws. Klenda also received all-league first team honors.

Boys' basketball coach Russ Hake recognized Justin Makovec for 48 steals during the season, Grant Garrard, 180 rebounds, and Todd Stahlecker, 76 assists.

Track coach Bud Peterson noted that Mark Pagenkopf recently broke the pole vault record set in 1956 by Francis Haefner. He vaulted 13 feet, breaking the record by one inch. He also has the most points on the season.

Golf coach Greg Wyatt praised his four-man golf team for an outstanding year while competing with teams from larger schools. Team members are Andy Matz, Dusty Caldwell, Chris Peterson, and Ryan Makovec.

Stephanie Hajek and Kathleen Meek were recognized as All-American cheerleaders.
