Centre High School girls' basketball team improved their overall record to 3-3 Friday with a 48-33 win over Wakefield in the first Eisenhower League game of the season.

Playing at Wakefield, the Lady Cougars pulled out to a 16-9 lead in the first quarter and led 30-16 at halftime.

They were outscored 12-8 in the third quarter but outscored the Bombers 10-5 in the fourth to cap a 15-point win.

Centre was 9-of-13 at the free-throw line compared to 3-of-13 by Wakefield. Centre also had 23 steals compared to 11 by Wakefield and turned the ball over 18 times compared to 33 by Wakefield.

Jackie Klenda and Alyssa Luna had eight rebounds each. Teaira Turner blocked two shots. She and Gutsch provided four assists each.

Going into the Christmas break, Coach Greg Wyatt feels positive about his team.

"I feel pretty good about where we're at, although we should have won a couple more games and be at 5-1 instead of 3-3," he said.

"Sometimes the girls get too aggressive and get in foul trouble. If we can cut down on the fouls and keep up our defense, we will be successful."

The junior varsity defeated Wakefield, 48-38. Kylie Burhoop led Centre in gaining a 12-4 advantage in the first quarter, scoring six points. The eight-point lead proved to be decisive, as both teams scored almost evenly in the next three quarters.

Leann Pankratz scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and was leading scorer for the game with 18. Burhoop scored 11 points.

Samantha Alvarez scored seven points and Kristine Jirak four. Bridgette Burns, Gloria Belton, Amy Hajek, Alisha Barney, and Brooke Carlson scored two points each.

In a C game, Centre defeated Wakefield, 58-15. Pankratz scored 21 points and Nellie Hill 12 to lead scoring.
