CHS girls take fifth at tournament

The Centre High School girls' basketball team lost the first game and won the next two to take fifth place in the Eisenhower League tournament at Wakefield.
The Lady Cougars were defeated by Hope, 54-36. They led at the end of the first half but were overtaken in the third quarter and never recovered.
After a slow 7-8 start in the first quarter, Centre went ahead, 24-19, by halftime.
However, the bottom dropped out in the third quarter. A trey by Selena Seifert provided Centre's only points compared to 14 by Hope.
A 9-21 scoring disadvantage in the fourth quarter added to the team's 18-point loss.
Hope shot 30 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free throw line compared to 18 and 37 percent by Centre.
Jennifer Krause scored 25 of Hope's 54 points.
No Centre player scored in double digits. Seifert and Megan Gutsch led scoring with nine points each.
Senior Laura Klenda, usually Centre's leading scorer, was held to two points. She had 16 rebounds.

After falling to the losers' bracket, the girls played St. Xavier Friday and won the game, 60-30.
The girls led all the way with quarter scores of 14-9, 10-9, 18-10, and 18-2.
The Lady Cougars were 10 of 19 at the free throw line compared to one of six by St. Xavier. They shot 30 percent from the field compared to 26 percent by St. Xavier. The Lady Rams turned the ball over 29 times compared to 16 by Centre.
Raschelle Jirak was leading scorer with 14 points, followed by Laura Klenda with 13. Klenda had 16 rebounds and Megan Gutsch stole the ball five times. Jackie Klenda led with three assists.

The girls played for fifth place Saturday and earned it by defeating Tescott, 58-36.
After a 7-7 first quarter tie, the Lady Cougars surged ahead in the second quarter to lead 25-18 at half-time.
They continued to outscore the Lady Trojans in the second half, 17-6 and 16-12, to win by 22 points.
The girls out-rebounded Tescott 58 to 25. They shot 34 percent from the field compared to 23 percent by Tescott.
Laura Klenda was incredible at the boards with 27 rebounds. She also led scoring with 14 points. Her sister, Jackie, had 12 points including three treys. She also contributed six assists.
