CHS girls win state powerlifting contest
Fenske, Gutsch set records
Students from Centre High School participated Saturday in a state powerlifting contest Saturday at Quivira Heights High School.
At least 39 schools and 295 individuals were involved in the event, which was sponsored by the Kansas eight-man football association.
Centre girls won their division with a total of 89.5 points, followed by Quivira Heights, 47, and Ransom, 31. Katie Carlson was overall girls' champion, lifting a total of 565 pounds.
Centre boys finished third with 80 points, behind Quivira Heights, 198, and Jetmore, 98. Thieen Antoszyk was overall boys' champion, lifting a total of 625 pounds.
Lifts fell into three categories: bench, squat, and power clean. Participants were divided into classes by weight.
Jill Fenske set a state record in her weight class (123 lbs.) in the girls' lightweight bench press at 125 pounds.
Megan Gutsch placed first in medium weight bench press and Carlson placed first in power cleans.
In boys' lifts, Bryant Gutsch won the power-clean contest in the 140-weight class at 235 pounds, a state record, and Seth Jirak won the squat contest in the 173-weight class at 400 pounds.

Power clean: lightweight — 5. Fenske; medium weight — 2. Klenda, 4. Gutsch; power — 3. Carlson.
