CHS golf team aims for state

Eight students are out for golf this year at Centre High School. They are led by third-year coach, Greg Wyatt.

Four players — Derek Belton, Chris Peterson, Ryan Makovec, and Dusty Caldwell — are seniors. They have played on the team all four years and have improved every year, according to the coach.

Nathan Brunner is the lone sophomore. Steven Hageberg, Josh Ryff, and Joseph Stroda have joined the team as freshmen.

Wyatt said Centre had a chance to go to state last year when the team led the pack after nine holes at the regional meet, but they failed to qualify at the finish.

"If we get good weather, maybe this will be our year," he said. He noted that wind usually is the biggest factor but is to be expected in Kansas.

The schedule has been scaled back from eight meets to five. The first is April 11 at Hillsboro.
