CHS players named to all-star football team
Kyle Luna and Curtis Gutsch, recent CHS graduates, have been selected to play on the East squad in the 2003 Kansas 8-man Division I All-Star football game to be held Saturday at Trojan Field in Beloit.
Luna was named all league linebacker as a junior and senior, received honorable mention as a junior and senior, and was team captain his senior year. His team was district champion in his sophomore and junior years.
Luna also earned a state medal in the 800-meter run in track and was captain of the basketball team. He was an honor student, fall homecoming king, student council treasurer and student monitor. He served as president, vice president, and treasurer of Lutheran Youth Fellowship.
Luna plans to attend Wichita State University and major in dental hygiene. He is the son of George and Dawn Luna of rural Marion.
Gutsch was a quarterback. He completed 124 of 259 passing attempts (48 percent), had 35 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. He carried the ball 1, 941 yards, an average of 7.5 yards per attempt and 15.6 yards per carry. He rushed the ball 166 times for 872 yards, an average of 5.25 yards per carry and 26 touchdowns. He caught the ball two times for 30 yards. His team was district champion during his sophomore and junior years.
Gutsch was a member of a baseball team which earned two state championships. He also was a member of a third place state regional baseball team and was named most valuable player of the state championship games. He was a four-year starter in basketball.
Gutsch was an honor student for four years and a student council representative. He plans to attend Bethany College and play football and baseball.
He is a member of Holy Family Parish. His parents are Scott and Sharon Gutsch of Lincolnville.
