City approves board appointments

Marion City Commission approved reappointments and new appointments Monday of Marion Planning Commission and Marion Board of Zoning Appeals members.

Reappointed to the planning commission for a one-year term were Sally Hannaford and Roger Schwab. New, one-year appointments were Ralph Kreutziger and Dan Crumrine.

Reappointed to the appeals board was Leland Heidebrecht and a new appointment was Ralph Kreutziger. Each were appointed to a one-year term.

Marty Fredrickson, building inspector, presented a year-end report.

In 2003, only 37 building permits were issued. In 2002, 69 were issued, and in 2001, 72 were issued.

Four new homes were built with two being pre-built homes with a total value of $307,000.

"Hopefully, 2004 will pick up," said Fredrickson.

In other business:

— Ordinance No. 1242 was approved which repeals Ordinances 1062 and 1093.

"The repealed ordinances are outdated and have been replaced with personnel policies and procedures," reported David Mayfield, administrator.

— Resolution No. 04-01 was approved,which waives the statutory requirement to use the generally accepted accounting principles in the preparation of financial statements and reports.

— Warrants in the amount of $5,436.94 were approved.

— Mayfield reported that he attended the Marion County Commission meeting Dec. 31 to discuss a county economic development director.

— The city received a letter from David Brazil, Marion County Transfer Station manager, that the transfer station will continue to accept one cubic yard of commercial and demolition waste.

Any customer who has n excess of one cubic yard of this waste will need to take it to the transfer station for disposal. City refuse trucks will not pick up the excess.

— Mayfield reported that the city received a donation of $1,000 from the family of Phyllis Melton for the memorial wall in Central Park.

To date, $2,880 has been collected for the project. Estimate for the project is $5,000. The city will continue to accept donations for the project.

— Becky Makovec, utility billing clerk, presented the December utility billing report. The report indicated that 265 Marion residents participated in the $10 Christmas lights credit.

— Fredrickson submitted a written utilities department report.

— Janet Marler, city librarian, submitted a written report.

A 20-minute executive session was called to discuss personnel issues. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.

The next commission meeting will be at 4 p.m. Monday.
