City council candidates need to file by Tuesday

The deadline is drawing near for those wanting to be candidates for the newly-established Marion City Council.

The filing deadline for four open council seats is noon Tuesday at the city clerk's office at 208 E. Santa Fe Street, Marion. The only criteria for candidates is to reside within the city limits. There is a $5 filing fee.

At press time, five candidates had filed — Jim Crofoot, Roger Hannaford III, Max Hayen, Gerald Kline, and Gene Winkler.

The positions of commissioner of finance, and streets and public utilities commissioner will be abolished with four council members elected at-large with no specific duties or appointments.

Currently, Crofoot and Hayen serve in the two commission seats.

The two council candidates who receive the most votes in the April 4 election will serve four-year terms. The candidates with the third and fourth most votes will serve two-year terms.

After the initial terms expire, council members will serve four-year terms.

The mayoral position, currently held by Martin Tice, will be up for election in April 2007. That term will be for three years. In 2010, a mayor will be elected to serve a four-year term.

A charter ordinance was approved by the commission following requests by citizens to expand the two-member commission and mayor to a four-member council and mayor.
