City crews busy with water leaks, snow removal

A rash of water leaks has kept Marion city crews busy in recent days, Public Works Director Harvey Sanders told city commissioners Monday.

"We didn't have many last year, but we seem to be making up for it this year," he said.

Sanders also reported crews had cleared snow this past week, cleaned sidewalks, and removed several tree piles from a railroad spur line.

In answer to a question from Mayor Eloise Mueller, Sanders said he believed placing a salt brine mixture on streets prior to winter storms helps with snow and ice removal.

He said crews first sprayed the streets with the mixture. Later, after businesses closed and vehicles were removed from parking areas, the parking areas were then coated.

"I think that brine mixture helps quite a bit," he said.

In other matters:

— City commissioners approved the appointment of Steve Wear to a three-year term, and Commissioner Larry McLain to a one-year term on the Marion Economic Development Advisory Board. Other board members are Nick Nickelson, Jack Regnier, Casey Case, Rodney Richmond, and Brad Seacat.

Susan Cooper, economic development director, said that any individual interested in serving in the future on the economic development advisory board, planning commission, or board of zoning appeals should let her know.

— Heard a Marion City Library report for 2002 from Janet Marler, librarian. Among the information, total circulation increased from 30,681 in 2001 to 33,678 in 2002. New patrons increased from 130 last year to 169 in 2002, and the number of total families increased from 2,428 to 2,597.
