City gives 60-day extension to owner years ago
The owner of one dilapidated structure was given another reprieve and another structure will be demolished.
Property owner Michael Hultberg apologized to Marion City Commission for not being able to meet the required deadlines for improvements of property at 201 North Freeborn, Marion.
Hultberg said the work was taking longer than he anticipated and wanted additional time.
City building inspector Marty Fredrickson said some improvements had been made but was still concerned about others — particularly a well that had not been filled. Hultberg said he was planning to fill the well this weekend.
Fredrickson also said he was concerned about the plumbing, gas, and water lines. Necessary repairs to those lines will not be known until the utilities are connected and turned on.
Hultberg said it appeared the garage was falling over but thought it was a window causing it to look that way.
City administrator David Mayfield reminded Hultberg the city's ordinance required houses to be livable and his house is not.
Mayor Martin Tice asked Hultberg if the necessary improvements could be made within 60 days. Hultberg said he would try.
Fredrickson was instructed to present a weekly update to the commission regarding the progress being made. Tice made it clear that this was the last extension.
Demolition to proceed
The property at 1018 Denver Street, owned by Donald Marques, has been slated for demolition by the city.
Fredrickson reported that Marques had come to the city office to inform the city he would mow the property. Fredrickson said Marques had removed items from the home.
A new heating system also had been removed by the contractor.
City attorney Dan Baldwin will draft an order and present it at the next commission meeting to give the city the authority to demolish the structure.
