CJHS boys take fifth in league tournament

After a 34-45 loss to Prairie Heights in the first round of the Tri-County League tournament Feb. 4 at Hope, Centre Junior High School boys' basketball team went on to defeat White City Thursday and Flint Hills Saturday to finish in fifth place.

Both games led to easy wins for the Cougars. They defeated White City, 54-15. After a 23-2 first-quarter lead, they were unstoppable, leading 39-8 at halftime and 43-11 after three quarters. They outscored White City 11-4 in the final quarter for the lopsided win.

The team completed five three-point shots including two by Brian Burhoop, two by A.J. Temel, and one by Jared Diepenbrock. They also completed 16 two-point shots, including four each by Trevor Troutt and Diepenbrock.

Three players scored in double digits: Diepenbrock 12, Troutt 11, and Burhoop 10.

After a 12-10 first quarter of play against Flint Hills for fifth place, the boys got fired up and went ahead 28-16 at halftime. They outscored Flint Hills 33-19 in the second half for a 26-point win.

The team completed 27 two-point shots compared to 15 by Flint Hills. They were 7-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Troutt scored a record 21 points, followed by Jacob Jennings with 11. Temel added nine, Klenda eight, and Zach Antoszyk, Tanner Brunner, and Diepenbrock four each.
