CJHS boys win one, lose two at home
Centre Junior High School boys' basketball team played three home games during the past two weeks.
Centre vs. Wakefield
They played Wakefield Dec. 10. At half-time, with Wakefield leading 17-9, it appeared that the Cougars were headed for certain defeat. However, they picked up their play in the second half, outscoring their opponent 15 to three in the third quarter and 10 to five in the fourth quarter. The result was a decisive win, 34-25.
Tad Remy, with 10 points, was the only Centre player in double digits. Other scorers were: Keenan Geissert, nine; Bryant Gutsch and Scott Peterson, six each; Clayton Garnica, two, and Chris Callahan, one.
B team
The B team was defeated 32-27. The Cougars trailed 5-9 at the end of the first quarter and continued to lag at half-time, 7-15. Their scoring improved during the second half, but it was not enough to win the game.
Scorers were: Lance Diepenbrock, eight; Garnica, Alfonse Klenda, and Sean Leihy, four each; Drew Donahue and Steve Hageberg, two each.
Centre vs. Herington
In a game played Jan. 14 against Herington, the Cougars were defeated 45-35. Down only by one at half-time, 17-18, they were unable to keep the Railers from outscoring them in the second half. By the end of the third quarter, they were down 26-33 and finally were defeated 35-45.
Remy had a good game with 14 points, followed by Geissert and Peterson, with eight each. Garnica added three and Gutsch two.
B team
The B team also was defeated 26-31. They were down only two points at half-time, 12-14, but were unable to go over the top during the second half.
Diepenbrock led scoring with nine points. Other contributors were: Klenda, five; Leihy, four; Potocnik, three; Garnica and Hageberg, two each; and Kevin Mueller, one.
Centre vs. Hope
Except for Hope player Z. Elliot, who scored 27 points, neither side had a very good night Thursday when they played at CHS. But then, when you have a guy like Elliot on your team, who needs a good night.
The Cougars lost to the Lions 38-20. Down 3-18 at half-time, they improved somewhat during the second half but still lost by 18 points.
Remy was leading scorer for Centre with seven points, followed by Geissert with six, Peterson, four, and Gutsch, three. The team now has three wins, four losses in league play and three wins, seven losses over-all.
B team
The B team defeated Hope 43-29. Though Hope was up on Centre 17-7 at the end of the first quarter, the tide turned for the Cougars, who outscored Hope in the next three quarters, 10 to 6, 14 to 0, and 12 to 6, to obtain the win.
Hageberg scored in double digits with 10 points, followed by Potocnik and Garnica with eight each. Other scorers were: Klenda, six; Thieen Antoszyk, four; Diepenbrock, three; and Nick McCafferty and Jimmy Cheever, two each.
