CJHS girls defeat Marion
A last-second three-point basket by Alyssa Luna provided a thrilling victory for the Centre Junior High girls' basketball team Monday in their home game with Marion.
The game was close all the way with quarterly scores (Centre-Marion) of 6-9, 12-12, 18-19, and 31-30.
Selena Seifert was leading scorer for Centre with 10 points. Erin Carr of Marion scored 13 points.
Other Centre players with points were Megan Gutsch, nine; Luna, five; Brittany Owens, four; and Teaira Turner and Alisha Barney, two each.
Marion's B team defeated Centre by a score of 30-8. Centre players who scored points were Kylie Burhoop, four; Samantha Alvarez, two; and Nellie Hill and Gloria Belton, one each.
Marion scorers were Erica Gies, seven; Danielle Cope and Kristin Waner, six each; Jessica Janzen, four; Jayde Hess, Lauren Helmer, and Kimber Hardey, two each; and Tedra Eis, one.
A C game resulted in a final score of Marion 14 Centre 4. Centre's Kristine Jirak and Nellie Hill scored two points each.
CJHS vs. Wakefield
Centre Junior High girls defeated Wakefield Thursday by a score of 29-13. The game was played at Wakefield.
The junior Lady Cougars pulled ahead 14-4 by the end of the first quarter, with five girls contributing field goals.
At half-time Centre led 18-8. The girls added nine more points in the third quarter while Wakefield added none, making the score 27-8. Although Wakefield scored three more points than Centre in the final quarter, they were behind 29-13 at the final buzzer.
Selena Seifert led scoring with 10 points. Others who contributed points were Alyssa Luna, six, Megan Gutsch, five, Alisha Barney, four, and Brittany Owens and Chelsey Tajchman, two each.
Roles were reversed in the B game as Wakefield defeated Centre 23-6. Against a strong defensive team, the girls managed to score only two points in each of the first three quarters and added none in the fourth.
Allie Will scored four points and Brooke Carlson had two.
