CJHS girls end season at league tournament

The Centre Junior High girls' volleyball team ended the season Oct. 14 with one win and two losses at the Eisenhower League tournament at Wakefield.

The first match was with Flint Hills Christian of Manhattan. The junior Lady Cougars kept it close in game one but lost 14-16. Scorers were Kylie Burhoop with seven points, Megan Gutsch, six, and Jessica Deines, one.

The girls didn't do as well in the second game, scoring only four points, three by Alyssa Luna and one by Burhoop.

Centre then faced White City and again was defeated in two games with scores of 12-15 and 10-15.

Scoring in the first game came from Luna, six points, Burhoop, five, and Gutsch, one.

In game two, Gutsch scored four points, Burhoop and Luna, two each, and Luna and Deines, one each.

The third match, which was with St. Xavier of Junction City, provided a winning finish to the season.

Defeating their opponent 15-2 in the first game, the team's leading scorer was Gutsch with eight points followed by Luna, three, Burhoop two, and Deines and Selena Seifert, one each.

The second game was tougher but the junior Lady Cougars managed to slide past St. Xavier by a score of 15-12. Scorers included Seifert with five points, Brandy Kaiser, Burhoop, and Deines, two each, and Alisha Barney, one.

Burhoop was the only seventh grader who played on the tournament team. She is the daughter of Centre High School girls' volleyball coach Yvonne Burhoop.

The team ended the season with three wins and seven losses.
