CJHS girls second in league tourney
After remaining undefeated during the regular basketball season, Centre Junior High girls defeated St. Xavier and Hope in the first two rounds of the league tournament to advance Saturday to the championship game.
There they suffered their first and only defeat at the hands of Flint Hills of Manhattan, losing by only two points, 31-29, to place second in the tournament.
Centre was down by four at half-time and again at the end of the third quarter. The girls outscored Flint Hills nine to seven in the fourth quarter, but that was not enough to pull off the win and the championship, bringing a successful season to a disapppointing close.
Selena Seifert led scoring with 12 points, followed by Megan Gutsch with eight. Other scorers were Teaira Turner and Brittany Owens, three each, Alyssa Luna, two, and Samantha Alvarez, one.
The girls won their first round, 28-25, Feb. 1 against St. Xavier of Junction City, as reported last week.
The contest in the second round Feb. 6 was a fierce battle. Hope led by three at half-time, 18-15, but Centre managed to pull ahead by one point, 29-28, by the end of the third quarter.
The Junior Lady Cougars had their best quarter of the game in the fourth, scoring 15 points. Hope only scored eight points and was defeated 42-36.
Gutsch topped scoring with 16 points, followed closely behind by Seifert with 14. Owens had seven, Alyssa Luna, four, and Chelsey Tajchman, one.
The girls end the season with 11 wins and one loss.
