CJHS girls win, boys lose at Marquette

Centre Junior High School basketball teams traveled to Marquette Thursday. The girls' varsity won, 30-27. The boys' varsity lost, 53-35.

The girls trailed 16-23 after three quarters of play, but they exploded with a 14-4 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to earn an exciting three-point win.

The difference came at the free-throw line, where Centre completed 9-of-14 compared to 3-of-12 by Marquette.

Shelby Deines scored 10 points. Carlye Simons was scoreless in the first half but scored 10 points in the second.

Ripley Howard added four points, and Sammi Seifert, Dallas Rosenow, and Josie Peterson two each.

The junior varsity played two quarters and won 16-1. DJ Chavers and Rosenow scored six point each, and Allison Shields and Tori Schill two points each.

Boys

The varsity boys played a competitive game in the first half and trailed by one, 22-23, at the break.

Cold shooting in the third quarter put the game out of reach. Centre scored six points compared to 20 by Marquette. They were outscored 7-10 in the final quarter to lose by 18 points.

Trevor Troutt led his team's scoring with 17 points. Tyler Klenda added five, Brian Burhoop and A.J. Temel, four each, Tyler Diepenbrock three, and Tanner Brunner two.

The junior varsity defeated Marquette, 31-12. Ten players contributed points: Cole Svoboda, six; Rustyn Kerbs, Heath Hill, and Jacob Jennings, four each; Jessie Kopietz, three; and Casey Kristek, Andy Matz, Klenda, Brunner, and Michael Kaiser, two each.

The junior high tournament began Monday at Hope. Parents' Night is Thursday, when Centre will be playing Flint Hills of Manhattan beginning at 5 p.m.
