CNB team finishes as CVL champs
After an 0-11 season last year, the Marion 12-and-under girls team, sponsored by Central National Bank, responded this year and defeated Peabody July 14, by the score of 11-5, to claim the CVL title.
The CNB team finished with an overall record of 10-3, a feat coach Rob Hett commended his team for after winning the tournament.
Initially, it looked as though Peabody might nip the CNB team as they shot quickly snared a run in the first inning.
But CNB rattled off five runs in the same inning as Emily Rogers, Josie Freeby, Lanna Carroll, Sarah Freeby, and Lauren Helmer scored and erased doubt of a possible upset.
Peabody added a pair of runs in the second inning and held Marion scoreless, to close CNB's lead to two.
But in the third inning, Marion scored two runs to Peabody's one as Helmer and Freeby both scored.
Peabody added a run in the fourth inning, but Marion added four runs of their oiwn as Lanna Freeby, Sarah Freeby, Helmer, and Valeree Hett all crossed home plate.
CNB sealed the game and the CVL crown after shutting out Peabody in the bottom of the fifth inning.
