Cold as ice or sweet as sugar?

Although the arrival of snow and ice in Marion was still a few days away, Marion Elementary School second graders constructed their own igloos in class Friday afternoon.
Discussion was loud and sometimes a little argumentative as the youngsters worked in teams to build igloos.
These igloos, however, were a little sweeter than the norm because they were constructed using sugar cubes and vanilla frosting.
The teamwork activity was the culmination of a unit in which the students studied the polar continents of Antartica and Artic.
Under the instruction of second grade teachers Susan Hall, Judi Stewart, and Shannon Britt, the students were divided into groups of five to work on their various igloos.
Using the vanilla frosting as mortar and plastic knives as trowels, students used their combined problem-solving skills to build their respective igloos.
After the designs were finished, awards were given to the students for their work. Awards categories were given for teamwork, hard working team, most creative igloo, tallest igloo, and roundest igloo.
The study of the seven continents is taught at the second grade level at MES, the teachers said.
