Communities in Schools receives $60,000 grant years ago
According to a news release from U.S. Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas, Communities in Schools (CIS) of Marion County has been awarded a federal grant of $60,000 for programs to promote drug-free communities.
The Marion County grant is one of four awarded to Kansas community service organizations. A total of $240,000 was awarded.
Linda Ogden, executive director of Marion County CIS, who wrote the grant application, said the money will be used to enhance services provided by existing community coalitions.
Ogden said the grant will be renewable for several years. Part of the money will be used to contract services for children who have severe behavioral problems and cannot function in a school setting or be handled by the teacher.
The service worker will provide play therapy and also will work with parents to show them how to relate to their children.
Some funds will go to support a co-ordinator for the Marion County Youth Team. They also will provide substance-abuse prevention training for youth.
The Communities in Schools organization itself will receive some of the money to pay administrative costs to continue to promote programs to reduce substance abuse. Ogden said emphasis will be placed on early childhood intervention to prevent drug abuse later in life.
