Cougar girls win one of three at Centre Quad

The Centre High School volleyball team opened its season Sept. 2 in a quad contest held at Centre.

The girls won the first of three matches by defeating Canton-Galva in two games with scores of 25-17 and 25-17. They scored rally points as well as earned points, under the new rules adopted by the Kansas High School Athletic Association (see separate article).

Laura Klenda scored six points in the first game and Jackie Klenda and Raschelle Jirak scored four each. In the second game, J. Klenda and Jirak led scoring with five points each.

In the second match, with Inman, the Lady Cougars won the first game, 25-19, and lost the next two, 8-25 and 10-15. In game one, Jirak led scoring with six points, followed by Brianne Stahlecker, with three. Stahlecker and Amanda Kleiber each scored one in the second game. Jirak scored four points in the third game.

The third match was with Elyria, which defeated Centre in two games, 25-21 and 25-22. L. Klenda led scoring in the first game, with four points. Jirak added two and Stahlecker three. In game two, leading scorers were Fenske, three, and L. Klenda and Stahlecker, two each.

Inman won the quad, 3-0.

Despite the two losses, Centre coach Yvonne Burhoop remains optimistic.

"We had some freshmen who saw action," she said. "We're going to struggle a bit at first, but it will pay off when they get some experience."

She said everyone on the team has a good attitude and is willing to support the others.

"We weren't overpowered, just inconsistent," she added.

Junior varsity

Two junior varsity matches were played. Centre lost to Canton-Galva in three games. In the 16-25 loss in game one, Jessica Deines scored four points, followed by Ashley Griffith with two. Nine rally points were added.

In game two, Ashley Griffith led scoring with six points. Jessica Deines and Selena Seifert each added three and Megan Gutsch added two. With eight rally points, the team won the game, 25-18.

Game three was lost 15-17. Gutsch and Alyssa Luna scored three points, and Tiaira Turner scored two. Seven rally points were added.

The girls lost to Inman in two games, by scores of 20-25 and 16-25.

Luna led scoring in the first game, with five points. Turner and Deines each scored two. Rally points were 10.

In game two, Gutsch scored three points, and Luna and Seifert each scored one, in addition to 11 rally points.

The Lady Cougars played Tuesday in a volleyball triangular at Solomon.
