The Centre Cougars faced Claflin Friday in a homecoming match-up and were devoured 50-0.

The Wildcats moved the ball successfully all night long, scoring eight touchdowns and two extra points. They led 38-0 at halftime and scored the final touchdown at 5:02 in the third quarter to end the game.

Claflin carried the ball 44 times for 266 yards rushing. The Cougars, on the other hand, were not able to make much progress on the ground or in the air. They had 11 carries for seven yards and three receptions for eight yards.

Their only first down came in the first quarter on two runs by Brandon Albrecht, which were followed by an incomplete pass from quarterback Ben Krause to Zach Slayden.

On the second down, Krause was pushed back for a two-yard loss. After a completed short pass to Slayden, it was fourth and nine, and the Cougars were forced to punt.

That series is typical of how the offense went all evening for the Cougars. And defensively, despite good tackling by Sam Bowman and others, as well as several knocked-down passes by Bryant Brunner, the Wildcats couldn't be stopped.

Albrecht was Centre's leading rusher with seven carries for 11 yards. Krause threw 3-of-15 completed passes for eight yards, all caught by Slayden. He also threw two interceptions.

Centre plays Quivera Heights Friday on the road.

The junior varsity played at Hope Sept. 24 and was defeated 56-8 in three quarters.

Centre's only touchdown came in the first quarter on a 14-yard run by Konley Harding. Cole Svoboda caught a pass from Harding for the two-point conversion.

Hope scored 28 points in the first quarter, and 14 in each of the second and third quarters.

Centre rushed 60 yards in 16 carries, and Hope rushed 335 yards in 37 carries. Centre passed for 49 yards, and hope passed for 64 yards.

Harding threw three completed passes for 49 yards and also threw one interception. Brian Burhoop had one reception for 35 yards, and Trevor Troutt had two receptions for 14 yards.

Tanner Brunner led defensively with 10 assisted and nine solo tackles.
