It was a tough start on the season Friday as the 1A Centre High School Cougars did battle at home against 3A Southeast of Saline. They were defeated, 65-35.
With many players coming from nearby Salina, the Trojans' roster was loaded with players more than six feet tall.
The Cougars worked hard to set up the ball at the offensive end but had a hard time getting inside. Even 6-foot-3 junior James Weber found it difficult to score.
SES also had the advantage at the defensive end, taking the ball to the basket again and again.
Centre trailed 9-18 at the end of the first quarter. Ben Krause scored a three-pointer.
The Trojans outscored the Cougars 20-12 in the second quarter, although Zach Slayden sank two from the three-point line.
The Cougars really bombed in the third quarter as they were outscored 19-6. Each team scored eight points in the fourth, and SES walked away with a 30-point victory.
Slayden topped Centre's scoring with 10 points, followed by Krause with nine.
No junior varsity stats were made available. The Cougars are playing this week in the pre-season tournament at Herington.
