Cougars lose district game to Goessel

A Cougar touchdown called back because of a penalty resulted in a close loss to Goessel in a district game played Friday at Goessel. The final score was Goessel 13, Centre 12.

Leading rusher, Todd Stahlecker, suffered a dislocated shoulder near the end of the game and probably is out for the remainder of the season, according to Coach Bud Peterson.

The Bluebirds scored in the first and third quarters. The Cougars' points were earned in the fourth quarter.

Stahlecker made a touchdown on a 55-yard run and Seth Jirak scored on a two-yard run. No extra points were added.

Centre outplayed Goessel on the ground, with 30 carries for 242 yards, compared to Goessel's 53 carries for 162 yards. Stahlecker led with 124 yards, followed by Travis Burns with 101.

Goessel compiled 109 yards passing compared to 55 by Centre. Both teams suffered a similar loss of yards on seven penalties each.

Five leading defensive players contributed numerous assisted and unassisted tackles.

"They did a great job," said Coach Peterson. "Brent Carlson and Joe Forsberg made some big plays throughout the game."

The final district game will be played at home Oct. 30 with Little River. On Friday, the Cougars host Quivera Heights.
