The Centre Cougars were defeated by Wakefield Thursday on the road and defeated Chase County Friday at home to split the final two games of the regular season. Their overall record is 7-12.

The parents' night game against Chase County was a thriller for home fans, as the Cougars chalked up a 55-41 victory.

The game started out slow. Field goals by James Weber, Alfonse Klenda, and Seth Jirak give Centre a 6-5 lead after one quarter. The Cougars picked up their play in the second quarter as Kevin Mueller and Thieen Antoszyk also found the basket.

Centre's aggressive defense frustrated the Bulldogs. The Cougars played all over the floor and repeatedly interrupted passes. They led 21-13 at halftime.

After a 14-14 third quarter draw, Diepenbrock and Jirak each scored a three-pointer in the fourth along with field goals by Mueller and Diepenbrock. The Cougars also added 10 free throws, resulting in a 14-point win.

Mueller scored 13 points, had eight rebounds, and took three charges, which were his averages for the season.

Jirak scored his seasonal average of 12 points. Klenda had 10 rebounds, his average on the year.

Other total points were: Diepenbrock eight, Klenda seven, Antoszyk and Zach Slayden six each, and Weber three.

The junior varsity defeated Chase County, 37-26. Kacey Hanschu scored 10 points, followed by Nathan Barney eight, Thomas Terreault and Ben Krause five each, Konley Harding and Savik Howard four each, and Ryan Richmond one.

Wakefield

At Wakefield, the boys had a difficult time finding the basket in the first three quarters. They were outscored 16-10, 19-5, and 26-13 to trail, 28-61.

Diepenbrock hit a three-pointer and a field goal and made two free throws in the fourth quarter, as Centre outscored Wakefield, 21-15. Five other players also scored field goals but it was too little too late, and they walked away with a 27-point loss.

Klenda led Centre's scoring with 13 points. Diepenbrock added nine, Jirak seven, Mueller six, Antoszyk and Weber four, and Terreault, Bryant Brunner, and Harding two each.

Diepenbrock provided four assists and Mueller had seven rebounds and took a charge.
