Cougars ripped by Lions
Injury puts Burnett
out for the season
Receiver Dustin Burnett was injured Friday when the Centre Cougars met the Hope Lions at Hope. He will be out for the season, according to Coach Bud Peterson.
Burnett was a junior transfer student and played an active role on the team. He contributed two unassisted and one assisted tackle Friday before suffering a broken leg in the first quarter.
The Lions went on to devour the Cougars in a lopsided 54-6 win.
The Cougars scored early on a 49-yard run by quarterback Seth Jirak. The extra-point attempt was no good.
From then on, the game belonged to Hope, as the Lions scored seven touchdowns and a safety, bringing the game to a close at 10:54 in the third quarter.
Peterson said his team made "a lot of stupid mistakes" which added to the big loss. The Cougars fumbled the ball four times and lost it three times.
Both teams carried the ball 24 times, Centre for 109 yards, Hope for 199 yards. The Cougars gained three yards passing, the Lions gained 39.
Jirak was Centre's leading rusher with 68 yards. He also led defensively with three unassisted and six assisted tackles.
The team plays Friday at Goessel.
