Cougars swamped by Solomon

It wasn't one of the Cougars' better nights Friday as they bumped up against a strong Solomon team and were defeated, 78-38.

After a trey by Todd Stahlecker, the Cougars were down by eight, 21-13, at the end of the first quarter.

Things continued down hill from there, with a 39-27 deficit at halftime.

The boys' scoring turned cold in the second half as they added nine points in the third quarter and two in the fourth compared to 21 and 18 by Solomon.

Stahlecker led scoring with 15 points. He shot 30 percent from two-point range and completed three of nine three-point attempts. Travis Burns scored 12 points.

Bryant Gutsch led at the boards with 10 rebounds, followed by Aaron Barney with eight.

The junior varsity contest was more favorable. The Cougars won the game, 53-36.

They were ahead, 24-19 at halftime, and maintained that lead through the third quarter. A 22-point run in the final quarter compared to 11 points by Solomon gave them the 17-point win.

Leading scorer was Scott Peterson with 14. Lance Diepenbrock and Tad scored nine points each. Alfonse Klenda added eight and Seth Jirak six.

Other scorers were Trent Hajek and Jimmy Cheever, two points each, and Jeremy Kristek, Thien Antoszyk, and Kevin Mueller, one each.
