Centre vs. Solomon

Centre played Solomon Friday at Solomon.

The Gorillas got off to an early lead, 9-4, as they took advantage of the Cougars' full-court press to get some easy lay-ups.

But several Gutsch three-pointers and Garrard two-pointers allowed Centre to catch up and tie the game at 16 all with 1:20 to go in the first quarter.

A last-second lay-up by Stahlecker gave Centre the lead, 21-20.

The Cougars struggled somewhat in the second quarter, scoring only nine points compared with 17 by Solomon. They were down by seven points, 37-30, at half-time.

It didn't get much better in the second half, and the Cougars found themselves down by 13 points, 53-40, at the end of the third quarter.

Just when the outcome seemed certain, however, the Cougars came back in a surprising burst of energy and better scoring. Following a lay-up by Stahlecker, and a steal and another lay-up by Stahlecker, Centre tied the game, 57-57, with 2:15 to go.

But a win was not in the cards. A Solomon three-pointer followed by four Solomon free throws ended in a final score of 64-59 in favor of the Gorillas.

Gutsch was leading scorer with 28 points, followed by Stahlecker with 11.

Centre's record now stands at nine and five overall and three and three in conference play.
