Country's founders were amazing

I finally finished "Benjamin Franklin, An American Life," by Walter Isaacson. What a "guy" Franklin was.

There are so many humorous facts to his life and yet, sobering thoughts about our country back in those formative years. It is amazing that a group of colonists would unite into one country. Benjamin Franklin had a lot to do with that.

When I took history in school, we memorized a lot of facts and dates. I think if we had learned more about the personal lives of those men, Franklin, Adams, Jefferson, and Washington, we really would appreciate what they did and we would stand in awe of what they mean to our country. Someone said of Franklin, "he pulled the lightning from the sky and the scepter from the hand of a dictator."

I am now reading "Kate," by Scott Berg, quite different, but still the story of a human being who had dreams and goals in life. Some say she is the outstanding actress of that century.

Old Settlers' Day was a big success as usual. A wonderful parade and perfect weather. I'm sure all those school classes really enjoyed getting together. If they had called for 1922 I probably would be the only one present. So you can see a lot of my friends and acquaintances have gone to greener pastures.

I still like to see those who are friends of my children. Age doesn't matter if you like a person. I just wish they would stay a little longer so I could have a real visit with each one of them. I guess "a little visit is better than none." Could that fit in with Benjamin Franklin's wise sayings?
