County benefits from company error
Consultant Gene Wilson reported Monday to Marion County Commission that an error made by AT&T worked out to the county's benefit.
Wilson said AT&T failed to file the telephone service contract that was approved by the commission in October 2006 with the Kansas Corporation Commission which resulted in the need for a new contract signed by the commission.
Originally, AT&T was going to increase the county's contract amount but Wilson said he convinced the company to remain with the same plan since the error was made by them and not the county. In the end, the county's contract remained the same and technically was extended another 18 months, being renewed for another five years at the same cost as in 2006.
In other business:
— An e-mail was acknowledged from architect Tony Rangle of Law Kingdon Inc. of Wichita regarding an inspection by the state fire marshal of improvements at the county jail.
The state required the county to make some cosmetic and staff changes which recently were completed.
— It was noted that letters have been sent to the Dickinson County Commission and Morris County Commission regarding bridges and roads that border county property.
— Deputy county clerk Tina Spencer reported that there was $2,879,243 cash on hand as of Feb. 29 in the county's general fund and $1,569,982 in the road and bridge fund.
— The commission accepted the resignation of Linda Brewer from the county's noxious weed department. Becky Chrisjohn was hired as a part-time secretary in the noxious weed department at $8.07 per hour.
— Pay increases were approved for Rose Funk, deputy treasurer, who completed her sixth month, from $2,184 per month to $2,236; and Brian Nuss, noxious weed and hazardous household waste departments, one-year anniversary, pay increase from $1,627 to $1,727 per month.
— Commissioner Randy Dallke requested and received a 10-minute executive session for personnel. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.
— Environmental health director and zoning administrator Bobbi Strait requested and received a five-minute executive session for personnel. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.
— Commission chairman Bob Hein requested and received a 10-minute executive session for personnel.
When the meeting reconvened, Hein announced that an offer will made to an applicant for the elderly department coordinator position.
