County canvasses election results

Marion County Commission conducted business as usual during Monday's meeting

The commission:

— Canvassed votes for Florence special election for adoption of city sales tax. There are 425 registered voters in Florence with 83 voting at Tuesday's election. The final tally was 52 no, 35 yes.

— Gerald Kelsey, road and bridge superintendent, and Jim Herzet, road foreman, were present for the opening of the transport fuel bids. There were two bids received for 3,500 gallons of diesel fuel, 1,500 gallons of off-road diesel fuel, and 3,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline.

Cardie Oil Company submitted the lowest bid of $9,101.20 for all. Cooperative Grain and Supply submitted a total bid of $9,306.00.

Kelsey asked the commission for permission to seek bids for a new truck. Kelsey said his truck has 130,000 miles on it. The capital outlay budget was reviewed. Commission granted permission to Kelsey to seek bids from the county dealerships for a new truck and a program truck with less than 10,000 miles.

— JoAnn Knak, emergency medical service director, and Daryl Thiesen, incoming director, presented the October report. There were 77 ambulance calls for Marion County and 10 first responder calls. Thiesen is going to be trained for Training Officer II and Instructor/Coordinator.

— Dale Snelling, park and lake director, presented the October budget report. Snelling said he didn't plan to spend anything additional this year with revenue below the anticipated amount.

The revenue to date is $137,247.70 and anticipated revenue for 2003 was $150,056.00.

"This year we only sold six licenses (pheasant and quail)," said Snelling. "Twenty years ago, we'd sell at least 10 books (20 licenses in each book) bird licenses."

Snelling attributed the reduction to more options for obtaining the licenses, especially over the Internet.

— Carol Maggard, county clerk, presented the special monthly report regarding cash on hand. At close of business on Oct. 31, total cash on hand was $5,073,951.58. Of that, $1,471,229.84 was in the general fund and $1,029,442.43 was in the road and bridge fund.

— Special auto budget report showed expenses of $1,444.28 for October.

— David Brazil, county planning and zoning, sanitarian, and transfer station director, presented the minutes from the Oct. 23 planning commission meeting. Three commission appointments will expire on Dec. 31. They are Eileen Sieger, Marquetta Eilerts, and Bob Unruh.

Brazil reported that the special waste permit for the county has been received for the removal of the medical waste on the courthouse grounds. Commissioners were concerned about the location of the equipment for the removal and discussed ways to reduce damage to sidewalks and lawn.
